To observe peer relationship development in social withdrawal, this study conducted peer relationship criterion test before and after the 12th session activity by using one group pretest-posttest design to compare and analyze the score, and looked at changes in linguistic, physical, musical response in fields of empathy, cooperation and self-directedness. Also, to see the change in percussion play program, each session were filmed, and the contents were analyzed in linguistic, physical and musical way.
This study aims to apply music therapy program of playing the percussions for isolated children to develop peer relationship and see the effect. For this, experiment was conducted for 12 sessions, 40 minutes each, once a week against four children aged between 5 to 7 as case study who were selected through isolation degree test from center ‘D’ in area ‘S’. Music therapy of percussions play is divided into three stages, where the first stage is focused around empathy (1st~4th session), second stage on cooperation (5th~8th session), and third stage on self-directedness (9th~12th session). Playing percussions, singing songs, and body expression, was activities used as methods applied in the program for helping social withdrawal to develop peer relationship.
The result gained from this study is as followed.
First, checking peer relationship criterion score before and after the percussions play the music therapy activity showed increase from average score of 26.25 to average score of 60.25 in peer relationship.
Second, conducting percussions play the music therapy activity resulted 18.25 average score increase of empathy/cooperation sub-criteria score from average of 16 to 34.25, and self-directedness criteria score increased by 15.75 on average from 10.25 to 26, in sub-criteria.
Third, positive behavior was observed as the result of observing linguistic, physical and musical response in percussions play the music therapy activity by each session.
Such results indicate improved peer relationship of social withdrawal by percussions play music therapy program, and indicates that this program can be introduced as an effective method in enhancing peer relationship of isolated children.
