칼빈의『공관복음 주석』에 나타난 섭리 이해 = Calvin``s Understanding of Providence in his Commentary on the Harmony of the Gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke

So far our understanding of Calvin``s understanding of providence has been mainly done by analyzing his main work Institutes of Christian Religion. In oder to overcome this kind of deficiency in Calvin research, a priority should be given to Calvin``s exegetical works in our effort to understanding this doctrine. This essay attempts to evaluate Calvin``s understanding of providence in his Commentary on the Harmony of the Gosples from the point of view of its origin and nature, its purpose and result, and from a Christological perspective. Calvin argues that the origin of providence originates from divine attributes including omnipotence, grace and goodness of God. Furthermore, its nature of can be summarized with four terms including hiddenness, universality, arbitrariness, and purpose-directedness. According to Calvin its purpose is related to human salvation, more specifically to strengthening of one``s faith. When accepted by faith, providence plays a substantial role for this purpose. However, Calvin does not forget that its ultimate efficacy is determined by the presence of the word of Christ along with these miracles. When not accepted by faith, providence is distorted by unbelief and it calls for divine judgment and the consequential punishment from God. It is natural and necessary to have christological approach to providence in our understanding of this Commentary since it main concern is to explain the person and the work of Christ. A Christological understanding of providence can be discussed in two points. First, Christ is not only the object of God``s providence but also its subject. Providence as the work of Christ is continuation as well as completion of that performed by God the Father. Second, the providence of Christ can be seen in occurring in following three realms: God``s creation, God``s people as individuals, and the church as the visible kingdom of God. Calvin understands the work of providence given by Christ in these three realms in terms of preservation and government. In God``s creation, Christ is portrayed as performing these two works of providence usually in terms of miracles. Also they are focused into the perspective of salvation as they are performed toward the people of God as individuals. Lastly, Calvin emphasizes the works of preservation and government toward the church are not yet realized in their fullness in our time because they will be fully revealed in the last days.
