Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effects of health perceptions, health knowledge, and health beliefs on health-promoting behaviors among health science college students, and to provide foundational data for developing effective health promotion education and support strategies.
Method: An online self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted from April 20 to 30, 2025, among students enrolled in eight departments (Physical Therapy, Radiation Technology, Health Administration, Optometry, PARAMEDICINE, Biomedical Laboratory sciences, Dental Laboratory Technology, Dental Hygiene) of the College of Health Sciences at a health college located in G Metropolitan City. Data from a total of 355 participants were included in the final analysis. The questionnaire consisted of 59 items, including measures of health knowledge, health beliefs, and health-promoting behaviors.
Results: The mean scores were 3.16±0.34 for health perception, 8.94±0.97 for health knowledge, 3.51±0.40 for health beliefs, and 3.18±0.49 for health-promoting behaviors. Health-promoting behaviors were higher among male students and those majoring in clinical health sciences, and were significantly associated with health concern, stress level, and health information-seeking experience(p<0.05). Health-promoting behaviors showed significant positive correlations with health perception(r=0.166, p<0.01), perceived susceptibility(r=0.241, p<0.001), and perceived benefits(r=0.361, p<0.001). Hierarchical regression analysis identified perceived susceptibility(β=0.197, p<0.001), perceived benefits(β=0.254, p<0.001), health concern (β=0.197, p<0.001), stress level(β=-0.148, -0.276, p<0.05), health information-seeking experience(β=0.126, p=0.010), gender(β=0.108, p=0.024), and major(β=0.103 to 0.118, p<0.05) as significant predictors of health-promoting behaviors.
Conclusion: Health-promoting behaviors among health science students are influenced by both cognitive factors, such as perceived susceptibility and perceived benefits, as well as lifestyle and environmental factors. Therefore, rather than merely imparting knowledge, university health education should support the formation and practice of health-promoting behaviors by strengthening cognitive factors in combination with motivation enhancement, stress management, and tailored health promotion programs.
