This study examined variables relevant to metalinguistic ability, which consists of two processing components(the analysis of linguistic knowledge dimension and the control of linguistic processing dimension), in childhood to determine predictive contributions of such variables as child`s age, linguistic ability, the experience degree of English education, and intelligence. Participants were 41 children who were 4-to 5-year old and had group types(high/low) based on the experience degree of English education. Children were administered Metalinguistic Test, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised(PPVT-R), and Raven`s Coloured Progressive Metrices Test. Data were analyzed with multi correlation and regression. Results indicated that child`s age, linguistic ability, and intelligence were significantly correlated with metalinguistic total and each dimension scores. Also child`s age, the experience degree of English education, linguistic ability, and intelligence were all significant variables in predicting metalinguistic total score and the most critical predictor of metalinguistic total score turned out to be child`s age. To be concrete, linguistic ability was the most critical predictor of the analysis of linguistic knowledge dimension, intelligence was the most critical predictor of the control of linguistic processing dimension.
