포스트모던 주체를 넘어서: 『유리의 도시』다시 읽기 = Beyond the Postmodern Subject: Revisiting City of Glass

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The critical attention on Paul Auster's City of Glass has generally focused on how it deconstructs the idea of subjectivity by debunking the myth of authentic self. Against the grain of this critical consent, this paper aims to demonstrate that the overall notion underlying City of Glass is the desire to reconstitute the autonomous self. The matter of subjectivity formation in the text is largely based upon the age-old conflict in American imagination between the individual and the social. By turning the protagonist into an independent individual who voluntarily marginalizes himself from the society, City of Glass reinstates the value of individualism that has been repeatedly circulated in the American political milieu, in which an autonomous individual can be (and should be) a form of effective social critique against the mind-numbing collectivity. By focusing on the constitution of individuality, this paper attempts to show that City of Glass is rather a typical example that faithfully embodies the national ideal of individual dissent, than an innovative way of conceiving the decentered postmodern subjectivity.
