This study aims to understand the features of university students' performance, exploring how their speaking performance is developed by diagnostic assessment of an Oral Proficiency Interview-computer (OPIc) (Kim, 2025) to plan a university's OPIc preparation class. Nineteen students who were enrolled in a general English class completed the OPIc self-introduction and past experience tasks. The spoken samples were recorded and analyzed using Kim's (2025) diagnostic assessment of OPIc. The results revealed that in the self-introduction task, the majority of students performed at Levels 2 or 3, with distinct linguistic and structural features characterizing each level. In the past experience task, only three students achieved the highest level, whereas the others demonstrated varying degrees of narrative development. The results also showed gradual development in narrative ability; students initially provided brief background details and simple sentences, then progressed to more detailed stories, including emotions and reflections, and finally produced well-structured narratives with clear chronological order and cause-effect connections. These findings have implications for future research on developing English-speaking test preparations and learning materials based on learners' actual oral performance. This study suggests a need arises to understand university students' English-speaking performance, developing more teachable and assessable procedures and materials that can be applied to OPIc test preparation.
