제3결집과 남방 테라와다(Theravada) 불교

국문 초록 (Abstract)

불교국가에서 가장 이상적인 불교적 군주로 받아들여지고 있는 인도 마우리야 왕조의제3대아쇼까(ASoka)왕에관해서많은이견들이존재하고있다. 사실상인도전역에서발견되는아쇼까왕비문·석주에나타나는아쇼까왕과남방테라와다(Theravada)불교전통에 나타나는 아쇼까왕 사이에는 상당한 차이가 있다. 본 논문에서는 붓다고샤(Buddhaghosa)의 까타왓투(Kathavatthu) 주석서(Atthakatha)의 서문에 나타난 제3결집과 관련된 내용들을 중심으로 제3결집에 관한 제반 내용들을 살펴보면서 남방불교에서 가장 이상적인 담마라자(dhammaraja)로 나타나는 아쇼까왕의 위상과 테라와 다(Theravada) 교단에서 제3결집에 가지는 사상적 위치를 살펴보도록 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are some disputes about the role of King Asoka, a model Buddhist king, in the patronage of Buddhist sangha as well as the propagation of Buddhism into neighboring countries. In fact we can get the two different pictures of the King Asoka either from the inscriptions of his edict through the India or from the various Buddhist literary materials. According to the former, he is depicted as a generous king with universal ethics who treats all religions equally. According to the letter, he is described as a universal monarch who supports Buddhism and Buddhist sangha even through intervening the internal as well as doctrinal matters within the Buddhist community. In this paper I am going to deal with materials relating to the 3rd Buddhist council centered around the Kathavatthuatthakatha and then to show the place of the 3rd council in the history of Southern Theravada Buddhism and the importance of the dhammaraja concept among various South and Southeast Asian countries.
