Much of the mid-rise multi-family housing stocks from the 1970s were developed based mostly on economic principles, resulting in building configurations and densities that diminish living qualities. The purpose of this research is to examine the existing block-level mid-rise multi-family residential developments to develop design principles and guidelines that 1. Respect the existing pattern of the surrounding urban development 2. Determine appropriate residential densities with the acknowledgement of the fact that retaining a certain level of density is inevitable for land efficiency, and 3. Provide improved semi-public amenities at a block-level. The design principles will then be applied to create a multi-family mid-rise high density redevelopment proposal on the existing residential blocks in Gangnamgu-Nonhyundong.
