      This study was performed to investigate the effects of chitosan on proliferation and IL-2 production of splenic cells from turner-bearing mice. Fiftythree male mice(BALB/C) were divided into 7 experimental groups consisting of control(saline), lentinan and 5 chitosan groups[COS-6(chitohexaose), CH-4(Mw; 10,000 ~ 30,000), CH-5(Mw; 30,000 ~ 100,000), CH-6(Mw; >100,000), and chitosan]. Following subcutaneous inoculation with sarcoma180(5×105 cells/ml), chitosans(100 mg/kg body wt.) and lentinan(10 mg/kg body wt.) were injected to mice through tale vein for 5 days. IL-2 production by splenocytes from tumor-bearing mouse showed significantly higher value in chitosan group than that of other groups(p<0.01). The addition of Con A to spleen cells brought about increasing of higher IL-2 production in chitosan group and CH-6, CH-5 and lentinan groups, in descending order, than other groups. When splenocytes were stimulated with Con A, PHA and LPS, mitogenesis expressed as stimulation index showed that lentinan, COS-6, CH-5, CH-6 and chitosan group showed significantly higher value than other group at 1-5 yg/ml and 3.0 yg/ml Con A. Stimulation index of lentinan group was significantly higher than other groups at 1.5 and 3.0 yg/ml PHA and those of CH-5, CH-6, chitosan groups were significantly higher than other groups at 1.5 yg/ml LPS. However, there was no effect of chitosan on the number of white blood cells depending molecular weight in tumor-bearing BALB/C mice.
