상담심리학에서 본 참회와 불교의 참회법

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 불교와 상담심리학이 참회를 보는 시각에는 기본적인 차이 가 있다는 것을 드러낸 연구이다. 불교의 참회는 초기불교에서 대승불 교를 거쳐 현대에 이르기까지 계속 발전해 오고 있는 수행의 방편으로 정형적인 모습을 가지고 있지는 않지만, 과오에 대한 자기 인식에서 오는 뉘우침과 공개적 시인이라는 기본적 요소를 가지고 있다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 범계(犯戒)로 인한 청정하지 못함에서 다시 청정의 길 로 돌아가는 것이 곧 불교 참회의 기본적 형태라고 볼 수 있다. 이와는 대조적으로 상담심리학의 참회는 잘못된 행위를 한 당사자 와 그 행위로 인해 해를 입은 피해자와의 관계 회복을 통한 양측의 심리적 균형을 회복하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 은연중에 스스로 피해 자의 의식을 가지는 내담자는 가해자로부터 진정한 참회를 받음으로 써 사회적 검증과 확신, 가해자에 대한 공감이나 긍정적 인상을 느끼 게 되어 과거 사건에 대한 재구성과 함께 긍정적인 마음을 가지면서 정신적 고통에서 벗어날 수 있게 된다. 이와 같이 피해자가 과거 사 건에 대한 새로운 시각을 가지는 데 큰 영향을 미치는 것이 가해자의 진정성 있는 참회이다. 불교의 참회는 피해자와 가해자의 심리적 관계의 회복을 강조하기 보다 개인의 수행에 초점을 맞추고 있다는 점에서 상담심리학에서 보는 참회의 의미와는 다른 의의를 가진다. 한편으로 불교의 참회법 이 가지고 있는 심리학적 깊이는 현대 심리학이 여태껏 해결하지 못 하고 있는 문제들의 효과적 대안이 될 수 있음을 보여주면서 이 글은 서구 심리학의 측면에서 본 참회와 불교에서 보는 참회와의 비교는 서로를 보완해 줄 수 있는 시각과 방법을 제공해 주는 상생의 길을 열어 주고 있다는 것을 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article demonstrates that Buddhism and counseling psychology have different perspectives about repentance. In Buddhism repentance focuses on purifying a practitioner’s mind and aims at his/her spiritual transformation. On the other hand, counseling psychology emphasizes that repentance should come between an offender and the person who was offended. Psychologists have studied on the role of repentance in the relationship between offenders and victims and maintained that the offender’s repentance reduces the victim’s negative feelings and ideas about the offender and improve the victim’s attitude toward the others. Within the victims the effects of repentance are mediated by impression improvement, emotional mitigation, and reduction in negative feelings and thoughts about the offender. This article also shows that in terms of repentance, Buddhism and counseling psychology are complements each of the other.
