백남준 미디어 작품에 내재한 ‘상호작용성’에 대한 고찰 : 플럭서스(Fluxus)의 ‘불확정성’과 ‘선(禪)’을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 백남준(白南準, 1936-2006)의 ‘미디어 아트(Media Art)’에 나타난 ‘상호작용성 (Inter-activity)’에 대한 고찰 연구로서, 그의 ‘미디어 아트’ 형성의 근저에 자리잡은 매체성과 개방성 에 기반한 철학적 개념과 양식적 특성을 분석함으로써, 백남준 예술의 ‘상호관계성’의 개념형성의 구체적 근거를 살펴보고자 한다. 미디어의 매체성에 기반한 백남준의 예술에서 ‘상호작용성’은 그의 예술전반을 관통하는 양식적⋅개념적 특성으로 해석된다. 이러한 특징은 그가 60년대 초 플럭서스 (Fluxus) 활동시기 영향받은 스승 존 케이지(John Cage)로부터 얻어낸 ‘불확정성(Indeterminacy)’ 개념 에서 그 철학적 근거를 찾을 수 있다. 백남준은 독일시기(1956-1963)의 ‘플럭서스’ 활동에서 존 케이 지를 통해 ‘불확정성’을 주목하며 자신의 철학적 개념으로 발전시킨다. ‘불확정성’은 존 케이지가 일본의 선(禪, zen)사상가 스즈키로부터 영향 받아 그의 예술양식에서 발전시킨 개념으로 불교적 배경에 해박했던 백남준은 자신의 예술세계에서 독창적인 개념적 특질로서 발전시키게 된다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 백남준의 작품세계의 해석에 대한 개념적 특질을 동서양의 통합적 관점에서 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 백남준 예술의 양식적 특성인 매체성에 내재한 ‘상호작용성’을 바탕으로 현대예술 ‘플럭서스’의 ‘불확정성’과 ‘선(禪)’의 관점에서 비교분석한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is a review of 'Inter-activity' in 'Media Art' by Nam June Paik (1936-2006), and aims to examine the specific basis of the conceptual formation of Nam June Paik's art by analyzing the philosophical concepts and stylistic characteristics based on media and openness. In Paik Nam-jun's art based on media media media, 'Inter-activity' is interpreted as a stylistic and conceptual characteristic that penetrates his entire art. This characteristic can be found in the philosophical basis of the concept of Indeterminacy that he obtained from his teacher John Cage, who was influenced by Fluxus' activities in the early 1960s. In the Fluxus activity of the German period (1956-1963), Paik Nam-joon focuses on uncertainty through John Cage and develops it into his own philosophical concept. Uncertainty is a concept developed by John Cage in his art style under the influence of Japanese Zen thinker Suzuki, and Paik Nam-joon, who was well versed in Buddhist backgrounds, develops this concept as an original conceptual trait in his art world. In this context, this paper aims to examine the conceptual characteristics of Paik Nam-jun's interpretation of the world of work from an integrated perspective of East and West. To this end, it is compared and analyzed from the perspective of Indeterminacy and Zen of modern art Fluxus based on the interactionality, which is derived from the media nature a stylistic characteristic of Paik Nam-joon's art.
