Ultrasongraphic studies of forty patients with solid and mixed thyroid masses histologically proven at Kyungpook National University Hospital from June 1983 to May 1984 were retrospectively analized.
Twenty three patients had masses by a rim of decreased echoes or by an echo-free rim, so called "Halo". Three of these lesions were papillary carcinoma and 20 were benign.
Presence of thyroid halo sign is nonspecific in differentiation of benign lesion from malignant lesion, but authors consider that ultrasound study might be useful for detection and localization of a lesion, and guide to needle aspiration, monitoring the size of a mass following therapy as well.
