중국 더화(德化) 도자 연구 = A Study on Dehua Ceramics in China

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the transformation of Dehua porcelain to theoretically systemize the modernization of traditional Chinese ceramics. Dehua county in East China’s Fujian province has long been known as a porcelain hub. Dehua porcelain is currently undergoing transformation after embracing a more modern style and elements. In this context, the transformation of Dehua porcelain was categorized by each time period, and the background and cause of the transformation were analyzed. Dehua porcelain was largely produced for civilian-use at the time. Dehua’s amazing growth as the national hub of Chinese porcelain can be attributed to the export of Dehua porcelain to many different parts of the world through maritime trade. Moreover, it lies in high quality materials and sophisticated handmade sculpture technology.
Multiple interviews were conducted with different individuals engaged in Dehua’s ceramics industry. Under the assumption that Dehua porcelain is still undergoing modernization, this study analyzed national and international exchanges and university-level curriculum, and artworks of local potters. This allowed us to identify the aspects of each element and individuals seeking modernization of Dehua porcelain based on traditional values and techniques. As modernization of Dehua porcelain is closely associated with the transformation of the entire Chinese ceramics industry, the significance of this study lies in shedding new light on the whole process of Dehua porcelain’s modernization.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 중국 전통 도자의 대표적 산지인 더화(德化)의 현대화 과정을 분석하여 이론적 토대를 마련하는데 목적이 있다. 중국 백자를 대표하는 더화는 최근 현대도예의 개념을 받아들여 전통 도자의 새로운 변화를 모색하고 있다. 본 연구는 당위성 확보를 위해 우선 더화 도자의 변화를 시대 흐름에 따라 특징을 분류하고 그 배경과 이유를 분석했다. 주요 내용을 요약하면, 더화가 다른 전통 도자 산지와 달리 독자적 발전을 이룰 수 있었던 것은 첫째, 지리적 이점과 노동력을 바탕으로 해상 무역을 통해 해외로 도자를 수출했기 때문이고 둘째, 더화가 양질의 백자 원료와 정교한 전통도자 제작기법을 보유하고 있었기 때문이다.
필자는 더화의 스튜디오를 오고가며 현지 도자 관련 종사자들과 여러 차례 논의를 거쳐 더화는 아직 현대화 과정 중이라고 판단하였다. 이에 따라 현대화 특징이 가장 잘 드러나는 국내외 교류와 대학 교육 과정을 분석했고, 전통의 토대 위에 새로움 모색하고 있는 현지 작가들의 작품을 사례로는 더화 도자의 현대화 양상을 파악할 수 있었다. 현재의 더화 도자 연구는 중국 도자 전체의 변화와 무관하지 않으므로, 그 과정을 인식하는데 본 연구의 가치가 있다.
