The zirconium, constructional material of nuclear is required to be exceptionally pure. Zirconium ores contain hafnium as much as 1 to 3%.
Hafnium is almost same to the zirconium in its chemical properties. The two elments sannot be seperated by usual reduction processes. But the zirconium has five isotopes. An isotope, Zr^94 yield Zr^95 which is unstable and undergo beta-decay with half life 65 days. Beta decay of Zr^95 is accompanied by gamma emmision.
And at the same time hafnium also has its isotope and this isotope is undergo gamma decay. The two isotopes have quite different gamma energy respectively. Just this point makes the analysis possible
