대통령 후보에 대한 정서적 반응의 형성과 정치적 효과

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 2002년 대통령 선거의 이회창 후보와 노무현 후보에 대해 유권자가 느꼈던 분노, 두려움, 희망, 긍지 등과 같은 개별 정서의 차이를 알아보고, 이런 정서가 유권자의 태도와 투표선택에 미치는 영향을 탐구했다. 특히 기존 연구에서 정치 태도와 투표선택에 영향을 미치는 주요한 변수로 알려진 성, 연령, 지역, 정치이념 등은 물론 후보에 대한 이미지와 이슈 근접성의 효과를 함께 통제한 후, 후보에 대한 정서가 정치적 태도와 투표선택에 미치는 고유한 영향력을 검토했다. 또한 이런 개별 정서의 형성을 설명하는 선행변수는 무엇인지 ‘정서의 인지평가이론’을 근거로 탐색했다. 서울 거주자 427명에 대한 면대면 조사를 통해 얻은 자료를 분석한 결과, 첫째, 유권자들의 대통령 후보에 대한 지지여부에 따라 각 개별 정서의 강도가 다름을 확인했다. 둘째, 후보에 대한 정서는 태도와 투표선택에 독립적인 영향을 행사함을 검증했다. 특히 이회창 후보에 대한 분노와 긍지 그리고 노무현 후보에 대한 희망과 긍지가 각 후보에 대한 태도에 유의한 영향을 미침을 확인했다. 마지막으로, 이른바 ‘정서의 인지평가 요소’로 작용할 것으로 알려진 변수들을 독립변수로 삼아 개별 정서의 형성을 설명할 수 있음을 제시했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explored the voters' emotional responses to the 2002 Presidential candidates, Hoi-chang Lee and Moo-hyun Roh, and examined the impacts of the emotions upon the voters' attitudes and voting decision. Based on the cognitive appraisal theory of emotions, this study also investigated whether the discrete emotions such as anger, fear, pride and hope were accounted for by cognitive antecedents of emotions. The data gathered from face-to-face interviews with a total of 427 Seoul residents were used to investigate political emotions and their impacts on attitudes and voting decision after controlling for the evaluations of candidate images and issue proximities as well as socio-demographic and political variables. First, there were characteristic differences of the discrete emotional responses such as anger, fear, pride, and hope between the voters of the two candidates. Secondly, some of the political emotions were found to have independent effects on attitudes and voting decision after controlling for socio-demographics and political individual differences. Finally, as expected by the cognitive appraisal theory of emotions, the voters' discret emotions were accounted for by cognitive antecedents such as political ideology, the evaluation of candidate images, the likelihood of winning the election and others.
