지역문화콘텐츠로서 한국 창작오페라의 가치와 참여자의 인식에 관한 연구 : 경주의『신라향가 오페라 시리즈』를 중심으로 = A study on the value of Korean opera as local cultural contents and the perceptions of participating opera artists : focusing on "Silla songs opera series" in Gyungju

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 『신라향가 오페라 시리즈』 사례조사와 제작·공연에 참여한 예술인의 인터뷰를 중심으로 참여예술인의 인식을 알아보고 지역문화콘텐츠로서 한국 창작오페라의 가치를 도출하는데 그 궁극적인 연구 목적을 두고 있다.
이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 경주의 『신라향가 오페라 시리즈』의 제작과정을 알아보고 선정의의를 논하는 것을 시작으로, 제작·공연에 참여한 예술인 24명을 대상으로 개별 심층인터뷰와 포커스그룹인터뷰를 통해 조사를 진행하였다. 첫째, 한국 창작오페라에 관한 인식, 둘째, 콘텐츠 개발 및 제작에 관련된 인식, 셋째, 오페라 참여가 개인에게 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 알아보고자 하는 3가지의 접근방식을 가지고 영역별로 인터뷰하여 결과를 정리한 후 그 논점으로 지역문화콘텐츠로서 한국 창작오페라가 갖는 가치를 도출하였다.
첫째, 참여예술인들은 ‘교육적 요소, 한국오페라 시장 발전’이라는 면에서 한국 창작오페라의 가치와 필요성을 높게 평가하였다. 둘째, 공연 콘텐츠개발 및 제작에서 중요하게 다루어야 할 것은 ‘지속적 교류, 콘텐츠의 중요성, 협동과 역할분담’으로 나타났다. 셋째, 예술인들은 공연 참여를 통한 ‘교육적 요소’인 배움의 가치와 ‘참여만족도’에 대해 높게 평가하는 것으로 나타났다. 앞의 3가지의 접근방식 가지고 인터뷰한 결과 지역문화콘텐츠로서 한국 창작오페라는 ‘사회적 자본형성, 예술인 개인역량 강화 및 활동범위 확대, 시민으로서 자긍심 증진, 지역 공연인프라 강화’라는 면에서 긍정적인 가치를 가질 것이라 기대할 수 있었다.
많은 한국 창작오페라의 선행연구들은 한국오페라의 역사를 설명하거나, 작품 소재와 음악분석 중심의 내용, 오페라 성장·발전 과정에 관한 내용에 치중된 경향이 있다. 이와 달리 본 연구는 지역문화콘텐츠로 제작된 한국 창작오페라에 참여한 예술인 관점에서 기술하고 분석하는 심층적 접근으로 연구하였다는 데에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 이는 예술인들 입장에서 분석한 초기연구로써 한국 창작오페라와 문화예술 산업 발전에 기여할 수 있기를 희망한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This case study of “Shilla Songs Opera Series” aims to investigate perceptions of artists who participated in its production through interviews, and determine the value of Korean operas as local cultural contents.
Under the research objective, this study first investigates the production process of “Shilla Songs Opera Series” in Gyeongju and discusses the merits of the selection of the series. Then the study conducts individual in-depth interviews and a focus group interview with 24 artists who participated in its production. The interviews were conducted separately for three foci: (1) perceptions of Korean operas, (2) perceptions of content development and creation, and (3) effects of participating in opera production on themselves. The interviews were summarized and used for determining the value of Korean operas as local cultural contents.
First, participating artists assessed that the value and the importance of Korean operas are high in terms of “educational elements and market growth associated with Korean operas.” Second, they listed “ongoing exchanges, importance of content, and collaboration and division of labor” as the important aspects to be addressed in content development and production of performing arts. Third, the artists assessed highly the value of learning, an “educational element,” through participating in production and “participatory satisfaction.” The results of interviews conducted with the 3-foci approach suggest that Korean operas as local cultural contents have positive value in terms of “social capital formation, strengthening competence of individual artists and expanding the scope of their activities, enhancing pride as a citizen, and improving local production infrastructure.”
Previous studies of Korean operas tended to describe the history of Korean operas, or focus on analysis of motifs and music in operas and development process of operas. Unlike the studies, the present study is significant in that it employed an in-depth approach in description and analysis from the perspective of artists who participated in Korean operas as local cultural contents. As an early research that conducted an analysis from artists’ viewpoint, it is hoped that this study contributes to the progress of Korean operas and the cultural and art industry.
