로베르의 언어대사전, 『프랑스어 알파벳 유추 사전』의 탄생과 사전학적 특징 연구 = The Birth and Lexicographic Characteristics of the Dictionnaire analogique et alphabetique de la langue francaise of Robert

Paul Robert, along with Pierre Larousse and Emile Littre, was a leading French lexicographer. Robert`s influence on the lexicographic world of French is immense and without an assessment of his achievements an examination of French lexicography in the 20th century is impossible. As a lexicographer, Robert not only compiled a dictionary but also, as a publisher, published a number of varieties of dictionaries. Currently, the publishing company he began is recognized as a leading dictionary publisher representing France, along with Editions Larousse. This study summarizes the publishing process of the Dictionnaire analogique et alphabetique de la langue francaise(1951∼1964), which is the most representative dictionary of Robert and became the basis of the other dictionaries published by Robert`s publishing company. This study further examines the lexicographic characteristics of this dictionary. Robert began working on his compilation of the dictionary with the recognition that there was no adequate substitute dictionary in France for more than 70 years after the publication of Littre`s Dictionnaire de la langue francaise. While the French language had undergone numerous changes, Littre`s dictionary had not been able to accommodate those changes. Robert had another motivation: there was no dictionary to help him find the correct word from the concept when he was writing.Robert was able to compile an original dictionary combining words with ideas, motivated by the recognition of a lack of existing dictionaries and the need for dictionaries to assist in writing. Robert`s dictionary is characterized by abundant citations, along with the Tresor de la Langue Francaise(1971∼1994). However, the most important feature of Robert`s dictionary is that it defines the headwords and presents various analogical words for each definition. Whereas the existing analogical dictionaries selected a central word without its definition and brought together related words under the central word, Robert defined the head word and let the user find new words from the central word`s meanings. This organization allows the user to identify not only the meaning of each word, but also its associative information and its semantic network. As a result, the Dictionnaire analogique et alphabetique de la langue francaise plays a pivotal role both as a decoding dictionary and as an invaluable aid to writing.
