청소년상담자의 대리외상 및 대처과정에 관한 질적연구-학대피해 상담을 중심으로- = A Qualitative Study on Youth Counselor’s Vicarious Trauma and Coping: Working with Adolescent Victims of Abuse

The purpose of this study was to propose a substance theory that describes vicarious trauma and the coping process for it that youth counselors experienced when working with adolescent victims of abuse, through the grounded theory approach. We conducted in-depth interviews with 10 counselors who practiced trauma-focused counseling with adolescent victims of abuse for more than 5 years at the Youth Counseling Welfare Center in eight different locations. Results showed 179 concepts, 62 sub-categories, and 26 categories emerging from open coding. The central phenomena of the coping process for vicarious trauma were ‘confusion about youth counseling identity' and 'baseline fluctuations on parental image'. The causal conditions were 'client's primary attachment impairment', 'extreme emotion beyond the threshold of the counselor', 'conflict between two worlds in the life of the counselor', 'abnormal symptoms due to psychological suddenness', and 'double risk of crisis intervention and counseling'. The contextual conditions were ‘heterogeneity of empathy due to the characteristics of abuse and parental differences', 'recurrence of trauma within the family', and 'the gap between policies and reality'. Action/interaction strategies used to cope with vicarious trauma were 'changing intentional attention', 'regaining balance through purifying impurities', 'enjoying daily life within existential limits',' 'accepting contradictions dialectically', 'focusing here and now', 'building psychological strength in pain', 'growing with parental experience’, and 'discovering wisdom through the time of struggle and wrestling'. These strategies were found to be facilitated by mediating conditions such as 'support from a spiritual perspective', 'team-based counseling to push the limits', 'social support network', and 'forming social consensus for advocating clients'. Results that followed were 'expansion of perspective due to cognitive flexibility', 'growing up as a practical expert', 'social contribution through meaning-seeking', and 'the loss of balance between work and rest'. The coping process for vicarious trauma was found to have four phases - 'psychological awareness', 'internal cleansing', 'solidarity empathy', and 'social participation'. This study provides meaningful and informative data for follow-up studies by developing a practical theory on what vicarious trauma counselors experience and how they cope with it when working with adolescent victims of abuse.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 학대피해 상담에서 청소년상담자의 대리외상 및 대처과정에 대해 근거이론 연구방법을 통하여 실체이론을 개발하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 청소년상담복지센터에서 5년 이상 근무한 자 중 대리외상 경험이 있는 상담자 10명을 선정하여 심층면담을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 개방코딩에서 179개의 개념과 62개의 하위범주, 26개의 범주가 도출되었다. 패러다임 모형의 중심현상은‘청소년상담 정체성에 대한 혼란’,‘부모상에 대한 기초선의 동요’이며, 인과적 조건은‘내담자의 일차적 애착 손상’, ‘상담자의 임계치를 초월한 극한 감정’, ‘상담사 삶에 공존하는 두 세계의 상충’, ‘심리적 급체로 인한 이상 증상’,‘위기개입과 상담의 이중적 이해관계’로 도출되었다. 맥락적 조건은‘학대 특성과 부모의 입장차이로 인한 공감의 이질감’, ‘가족 내 이어지는 외상의 대물림’, ‘제도와 현실의 괴리’로 나타났다. 작용/상호작용 전략으로는 ‘의도적 주의 전환하기’,‘정화 작업을 통한 균형 회복하기’, ‘실존적 한계 내 일상을 향유하기’,‘변증법적으로 모순을 수용하기’,‘지금-여기에 몰입하기’,‘고통 속에서 심리적 근력 기르기’,‘부모의 경험으로 동반 성장하기’,‘분투와 씨름의 시간을 통해 지혜 발견하기’이며, 중재적 조건은 ‘영적 관점을 통한 지지’, ‘한계를 버텨내기 위한 팀 기반 상담’, ‘사회적 지지망’, ‘내담자 옹호를 위한 사회적 공감대 형성’이다. 결과는 ‘인지적 유연함으로 인한 부모상의 확장’, ‘실천적 전문가로 성장’. ‘의미추구를 통한 사회적 기여’, ‘업무와 쉼의 균형감 상실’로 나타났다. 과정분석 결과는 ‘심리적 자각’,‘내적 정화’, ‘연대적 공감’, ‘사회적 참여’의 4단계의 과정으로는 나타났다. 본 연구의 의의는 청소년상담자의 대리외상 및 대처 과정이 어떻게 이루어지는지에 대한 실체이론 개발을 통해 후속 연구를 위한 기초 자료를 제공했다는 점에 의의가 있다.
