From the recognition that, in spite of the emphasis on the free play, it has little taken place, this research is to reinterpret the meaning of it by analyzing children‘s recognition of the free play which is one of the effective teaching-learning method for the education of the children. The research studied the free play of 5 year-olds at two child care centers in Seoul. In this study, The collecting and analysis of data is based on ethnological approach.
The study show that the children distinguish between free play and non-free play, as what they could do at their will and must do, and what is fun and not, and what they take part actively and passively, and what is physical activity and cognitive activity, and what is teacher's interference.
