전문적 도움 추구 행동에 영향을 미치는 심리적, 문화적 요인 = Psychological and Cultural Antecedents to Help-Seeking

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 내담자들이 전문적 도움 추구를 하기까지 다양한 변인들이 매개하고 있음에 주목하여 개인적 변인(심리적 불편감, 자기은폐, 사회지지망) 및 문화적 변인(개인주의-집단주의)이 전문적 도움 추구 태도에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 서울, 경기, 인천, 광주 지역 5개 대학 162명의 대학생들을 대상으로 도움 추구 태도(Fisher & Turner, 1970), 심리적 불편감(SCL-90-R, 김광일 등, 1984), 자기은폐 성향(Larson & Chastain, 1990), 사회지지망(Vaux, 1985), 개인주의-집단주의(Singelis & Triandis et al., 1995)를 측정하였다. 위계적 다중회귀분석을 사용하여 문화적 변인과 개인적 변인이 전문적 도움 추구 태도에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 수직적 집단주의 경향이 높을수록, 사회지지자원의 유용성에 대한 믿음이 부정적일수록, 자기은폐가 높을수록, 전문적 도움 추구에 대해 부정적인 태도를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 전문적 도움을 필요로 하지만 이러한 특성을 지닌 잠재적 내담자들이 전문적 상담에 대해 지니고 있는 거리감과 부정적 태도를 감소시키기 위한 방안으로 다양한 대처 방안을 모색하는 노력이 필요함이 시사되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of cultural variables (horizontal individualism, horizontal collectivism, vertical individualism, and vertical collectivism) and individual psychological variables(psychological distress, social-network orientation, and self-concealment) on attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help in Korea. One hundred and sixty two undergraduates (64 men and 98 women) participated in this research. Each participant received a package of the instruments; The Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale(ATSPPHS: Fisher & Turner, 1970), the Symptom Checklist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R: Kim et al, 1984), the Network Orientation Scale(NOS: Vaux, 1985), the Self-Concealment Scale (SCS: Larson & Chastain, 1990), and the Individualism-Collectivism Scale(ICS: Singelis & Triandis et al, 1995). To analyze data, t-test, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were conducted. The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that the vertical collectivism and horizontal collectivism in cultural variables showed significant influence on attitudes toward seeking professional help. Network orientation and self concealment in personal variables showed a significant influence on attitudes toward seeking professional help. (4) The result of hierarchical multiple regression analysis suggested that the higher the level of vertical individualism, negative social-network orientation, self-concealment people exhibit, the more negative attitudes they have toward seeking professional psychological help. Implications of the findings for counselors and teachers were discussed.
