성조 발생론: 동아시아 지역 관련성 지표

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 에드윈 풀리블랭크(Edwin G. Pulleyblank)의 1986년 논문 ‘성조 발생론: 동아시아 지역 관련성 지표(Tonogenesis as an Index of Areal Relationships in East Asia)’를 번역하고 상세한 해설을 제공한다. 이 논문은 저자가 오랜 기간 축적한 연구 성과를 토대로 중국어와 인접 언어에 나타나는 성조 발생 과정을 소개하고, 아시아 성조 언어의 발생과 확산에 미친 중국어의 영향을 논의한다. 이는 중국어 역사음운론의 범위를 넘어, 중국어와의 접촉을 아시아 지역 여러 언어의 성조 발생의 주요 원인으로 전제하는 많은 연구에서 인용되는 고전적 논문이다. 따라서 본고는 중국어 음운론뿐만 아니라 최근 빠르게 발전하고 있는 지역 언어학(areal linguistics)의 관점에서 중국어 음운 연구를 확장할 수 있는 계기를 제공하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper translates Pulleyblank(1986) ‘Tonogenesis as an Index of Areal Relationships in East Asia’, and further provides an introduction of the languages that have presumably been in constant contact with Chinese as well as a detailed explanation of earlier research on the linguistic influence of Chinese on its neighboring languages. With his extensive scholarly work on historical phonology and the history of China, Pulleyblank(1986) demonstrates the role that Chinese has played during its long history as a culturally and linguistically dominant language in Asia. In particular, his claim that Chinese was the ultimate source for the tonogenetic processes shared by a large number of Asian tone languages has been widely accepted in an increasing body of research on areal diffusion of linguistic features. The present paper, therefore, can contribute to expanding the research horizons of Chinese historical phonology and phonetics to such areas as language contact, areal linguistics, and linguistic typology.
