In response to worsening population decline in rural areas, the Korean government has expanded policy efforts, including the annual allocation of 1 trillion KRW for the Local Extinction Response Fund since 2022. Local governments are adopting new travel trends—such as “workation” centers— to attract living populations by leveraging the remote work culture accelerated by COVID-19.
Travel trends evolve annually with social and environmental changes and are increasingly integrated into regional population policies. Notable examples include Jeju’s “living for a month” trend after the creation of the Olle Trail and the 2019 government initiative for local tourism.
This study analyzed the evolution of travel trends from 2014 to 2023 using Textom, collecting data from platforms like Google, Naver, blogs, and news. Through text mining, key keywords such as guesthouse, glamping, hocance, and workation were identified.
A pooled OLS regression was conducted focusing on Gangwon Province, using tourism business indicators and regional economic metrics. Travel trend variables (search volume and related accommodation business numbers) were included.
Results showed that trends like workation positively impacted economic growth and population stability. The findings suggest that travel trends can be effective tools for local economic revitalization and balanced national development.
