혼성지각에 기반을 둔 혼성정체성 실험과 감각질풍경 - 미디어아트와 인지과학 간 융합적 관점에서 = Hybrid Identity Experiment due to Hybrid Perception and Qualia Landscapes - Based on Convergent Perspective between Media Art and Cognitive Science

The perceptual experiences of human beings represent important events which connect their thoughts to the world around them. Modern history has eagerly proved that the limit of human perception can become a key, opening new perceptions and introducing new worlds. Beyond the limit of human perception, experimentation to hybridize other’s perceptions which differ from human perceptions or to realize ‘new perceptions created in new ways’ provides a new perspective on the world by transforming human perceptions themselves. This paper aims to explore such a hybrid perception and the process of constructing a hybrid identity through interdisciplinary research between art and science. The exploration based on hybrid perception and the transformation of perception also offers a retrospective on the inter-relationships between art and science. In order to examine the hybrid perception and transformation of perception, this study investigates the possibility of the co-existence between subjectivity and objectivity through the concept of ‘qualia.’ Here, qualia is defined as a raw feeling which exists in the layer of ‘pre-recognition’ and between sense and perception, as a unit of phenomenological experience. Because the sense of qualia arises before perception, it is a pre-stage of subjectivization and can therefore be shared with others. In this sense, exploring the qualia landscape is the first step toward looking at the world with co-existing perspectives of the subject and the object and through hybrid identity.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인간의 지각경험은 인간의 사고와 세계를 연결하는 중요한 통로이다. 인간 지각의 한계는 새로운 세계로 들어가는 신지각의 열쇠가 되기도 한다는 사실을 인류의 근현대사는 숨 가쁘게 증명해 왔다. 인간의 지각의 한계에서 연장하여 ‘인간의 그 것과 상이한 타지각’이나 ‘새롭게 창조된 신지각’과 혼성하는 실험은 인간의 지각경험 자체를 변형시킴으로써 세계에 대한 다른 관점을 제공하게 된다. 이렇게 생성된 혼성지각을 통해 혼성 정체성을 구성하는 과정을 과학-예술 융합적 방법론을 통해 탐구하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. 이러한 지각 변형 내지 지각 혼성에 기반을 둔 관점 실험은 과학과 예술 사이의 관계를 재조명하는 의미도 함께 지니고 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 ‘감각질’ 개념을 도입하여 1인칭 관점과 3인칭 관점의 공존 가능성을 탐구한다. 본 논문에서 감각질은 인지과정이 일어나기 전(前) 단계의 감각-지각 간(間) 층위의 날 것으로서의 느낌 또는 현상학적 경험의 단위로 정의된다. 이러한 감각질은 인지 전이기 때문에 주관화되기 이전의 상태로서 지각의 공유 가능성을 가질 수 있다. 이러한 의미에서 감각질풍경을 탐구하는 것은 주관과 객관이 공존하는 혼성지각적 관점에서 바라본 세계를 통해 형성된 혼성적 정체성 연구와도 밀접히 관련된다.
