    The study was conducted in general surgery unit of a large university hospital from March 1994 to March 1995. Ten gastrectomy patients who were experiencing nausea and vomiting during 6 cycles of cancer chemotherapy regimen containing Cisplatin were the subjects of this study.
    The purposes of this study were to identify the period of need of dietary intake and degree of calorie need among gastrectomy patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy.
    The subjects kept daily self record of dietary in take and nausea/vomiting, and body weight was checked during 6 cycles.
    The findings of this study were as follows:
    1. Body weight gradually decreased following 2nd cycle of chemotherapy. But there was no statistically significant difference by chemotherapy cycles. Degree of weight loss was compared by date of its cycle. The weight of the 5th day was statistically significant decreased in comparision to 1st day of all cycles.
    2. Nausea/vomiting score by cycle was the highest at 4th cycle. But there was no statistically significant change. The highest nausea/vomiting score was shown at 3rd day of chemotherapy on all cycles. The change was statistically significant at 4th and 6th cycles.
    3. They took 1/3∼1/5 of recommended dietary allowances during chemotherapy. Calorie intake amount was the lowest at 4th cycle. There was no regular pattern in daily calorie intake by cycle. The lowest calorie intake was shown at 3rd day of chemotherapy except 1st and 5th cycles, and it was significant decrease.
    As conclusion, there was no significant difference in weight, calorie intake and nausea/vomiting by chemotherapy cycle.
    Nausea and vomiting score increased at 4th cycle and 3rd days of all cycles, and calorie intake was lowest at the time.
    It is suggested that
    1) Adequate control of nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy is required to improve food intake.
    2) Frequent small intake of favorable food should be encouraged at 4th cycle and 3rd days of all cycles.
    3) Follow up care for dietary intake should be continued after discharge.
    4) Further study is needed using more strictly controlled research design and objective measures assessing nutritional status.
