Korean Protestantism, since its beginnings in the late 19th century, has endeavored to find and accomplish its mission in Korean history. A historical survey reveals that the historical missions that members of the Korean Protestant Church assumed at each stage of national history met the national needs of the time. Korean Protestant Christians took a leading role in anti-feudal and social reform movements of late Yi Korea. They were also active in various nationalist activities against Western and Japanese encroachment. When the Yi Dynasty fell to the Japanese imperialism, Korean Christians contributed much to the anti-Japanese, independent movement. After the liberation, Korean Christians carried out their social mission by participating in democratic and human rights movements since the 1960s and in the national reunification movement since the 1970s.
It is arguable whether one could safely call these historical roles that Korean Protestants have taken the ‘Christian Nationalist Movement in Korea.’ One of the problems in so doing is that those were the story of only a few active Christians and not of the leaders and mainstream of the church. It is true that the Protestant mainstream was indifferent to militant anti-Japanese activities in the early 20th century and to movements for democracy, human rights, and national reunification in the latter part of the century. However, historians do not call a historical movement a nationalist movement only when leaders of the nation or a majority of the Korean people took part in it. One might defme a collective Christian activities to be a ‘Christian nationalist’ movement when the activities originated from the participants’ efforts to be faithful both to the Christian teachings, and to historical responsibilities of the time.
When a significant number of Korean Christians saw the time and behaved differently from others and it was due to their religion, one could characterize their activities as "Christian." Therefore, in order to name certain activities of Christians to be a Christian nationalist movement, one needs to demonstrate two things: firstly, one should show that the movement met the historical needs of the Korean people, secondly, one has to reveal that the activities reflected Christian teachings. The future of Korean Christianity depends upon how Korean Christians respond to the historical needs. The Korean church is now standing in front of mounting problems of the Korean society, namely, issues related to human rights, democracy, national reunification, and peace.
