Today adolescent smoking is one of the most serious problems in our society. In this study we surveyed the smoking status and patterns, nicotine dependency and factors associated with smoking for technical high school students, this study tried to provide helpful materials which can be used to make education plans to let them stop smoking.
From december 2 to december 4, 1997 two technical high schools in sunchun avea were arbitrarily selected. the subjects for this study consisted of 364 students. the analysis of data was done by spss/pc+program using real number, percentage, mean, t-test ANOVA and X^2-test.
The results of this study were as follows;
(1) smokers were 39.8% among total subjects students who had habitually the higher the average family income, smoking family members recorded comparatively high smoking rate smoking. As for the motives to smoke, 35.9% started with recommendation by friends, 32.4% started with curiosity, 16% started for resolution of stress. As for the starting age of smoking, 46.2% began to smoke high schools 1st, 35.2% began to smoke before graduation of middle schools. As for the average smoking amount, 84.2% smoked less than 10 cigarettes per day. 70.4% of smoking students say that will stop smoking.
(2) Relationship of smoking status to environmental factors, 99.3% of smoking group and 71.2% of non-smoking one experienced drinking. In regard to the resaltionship between smoking and school performance, non-smoking students make more high grades. 32.4% of smoking students say that they are not satisfied with the school life, their satisfactions are lower than satisfaction of non-smoking students(17.3%)Regarding the attitude to smoking teachers, 46.9% of smoking students state that they are affected by them and positive view to smoking behaviors. Smoking status and drinking experience, number of smoking girl friends, school smoking teachers were statistically signifficant difference(p=.002)
(3) The median score of Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire(FTQ) was 3, 7, Percentage of studetns with high FTQ score (FTQ>_7) was 11.0%. nicotine dependency (FTQ) score and drinking experience addidting drug, drinking count, number of smoking girl friend, school per-formance, satisfaction to the school life were statistically signifficant difference (p=.000).
