Gangjin Baekryunsa(法蓮寺) temple built by National Monk Wonmyo (圓妙國師) Yose (了世) is prominent as the center of the Goryeo Baekryun society movement. The so-called Baekryunsa temple is well-known as a long-standing Buddhist temple that has left a great footprint in the Buddhism in our country as well as Goryeo Buddhist temple, and is famous for its Buddhist thought.
At Goryeo, National Monk Wonmyo Yose (圓妙國師 了世) went to the site for Baekryunsa temple in person. He started the construction of the Baekryunsa temple in 1211 (7th year of Heejong) with his disciples including Wonhyeong (元瑩), Jishim (之甚), and Beopan (法安), etc. Completion in 1216 (the 3rd year of Kojong) can be a clear establishment or the first construction. In honor of this, Gojong gave Yose a call to National Monk Wonmyo (圓妙國師) in 1237. It is said that Gojong always gave gifts during the holidays. Since then National Monk Wonmyo has established a tradition of disciple Sajasangseung. Baekryunsa temple was prosperous for eleven generations until the 11th monk Muwe (無畏大師). The Baekryunsa temple was later largely reconstructed from the time of Sejong (1419-1450) in the early Joseon dynasty.
Yose`s Baekryun society thought can be said to be a practice of Cheontae thought based on Beophwagyeng (法華經). The late Goryeo period of the 13th century can be said to be a practical social movement as the general public grew in the local landed proprietor level, which was developing since the 12th century. The idea of Yose is a practice by the Cheontae religion view based on Beophwagyeng. This characteristic can be seen as forming a unique faith society different from Jeonghye society of Bojo Jinul. That is to say, it is a form of faith movement that led to the widespread participation of local barons, officials, and the general public. The Baekryunsa temple reconstructed by National Monk Wonmyo Yose is the idea of Baekryunsa temple construction, which is that of Yose`s Baekryun society idea.
