Baekryunsa is a famous temple located in the spectacular Gangjin beach in Jeonnam.
It was founded in Goryeo in 1216 as a famous Baekryun society temple by National Monk Wonmyo Yose (了世) and is famous for a temple which left great achievements in Korean Buddhist history. Daeungjeon of Baekryunsa is enclosed with Samse Buddha Statue, which symbolizes Baekryunsa. This Baekryunsa Samse Buddha Statue is a vital seated wooden Buddha statue representing the second half of the Joseon Dynasty in terms of size and quality.
First, Baekryunsa Samse Buddha Statue can be regarded as the Buddha Statue built in the second half of the 1st century as Baekryunsa Daeungbojeon was determined to have been built around 1762. Buddha statues with absolute age in the late 18th century are almost unknown, and this Samse Buddha Statue sculpted in 1762, is the most important work for the study of Buddha Statue at that time. This is the most important data for the Buddha Statue study of the style of the latter half of the 18th century, which corresponds to the middle stage of the process of transition from the style of the late 17th century and the early 18th century to the style of the 19th century.
