안중근과 천주교의 관계에 대한 비판적 검토 : 독립운동기를 중심으로 = Critical examination on the relations between Ahn, Joong-geun and the Roman Catholic church -Focusing on his activities for Independence movement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근의 안중근 연구를 살펴보면 안중근과 천주교의 상호관계를 다룬 내용이 많아지고 있는 특징을 알 수 있다. 천주교 신자였던 안중근의 독립운동을 제대로 이해하는데 이러한 작업은 반드시 필요하다는 점에서 바람직한 일로 생각된다. 그러나 안중근을 천주교와 연결시켜 살피고자할 때 사료나 관점 등에서 여러 가지 문제점이 나타나는 것도 사실이다.
첫 번째는 안중근의 천명론과 관련된 것이다. 안중근의 독립운동을 이해하는 한 방편으로 천명론을 강조하는 것은 하나의 접근방법으로는 유효하나, 그것을 확대 해석할 필요는 없을 것으로 생각한다. 사실 그에게 천명이란 구체적으로 독립운동이나 그 내용 등을 지칭하는 것은 아니었다. 그가 천명을 인간이 본성을 따라서 선하게 살아서 하늘, 즉 하느님에게 죄를 짓지 않도록 해야 한다는 의미로 사용하였기 때문이다.
두 번째는 빌렘 신부의 안중근 의거에 대한 인식 부분이다. 빌렘 신부는 안중근과의 마지막 면담을 통해서 정교분리의 원칙에 따라 안중근 의거를 긍정하지 않았던 그의 마음을 바꾸었다는 것이다. 그러나 그것은 사실과 다르다. 빌렘 신부에게 있어서 안중근의 행동이 어떠한 동기에게 나온 것인가를 이해하는 것과, 안중근의 의거를 지지하는 것은 서로 다른 별개의 차원이었기 때문이다.
세 번째는 드망즈 신부의 안중근 의거에 대한 후원 여부이다. 드망즈 신부를 중심으로 한 세력이 안중근 의거를 적극적으로 옹호하였다는 것이다. 그러나 안중근 의거를 최초로 소개한 작자 미상의 『근세역사』의 저자를 드망즈 신부와 곧바로 연결시켜 보기는 어려울 것 같다. 그리고 그가 뮈텔 주교와 함께 정교분리정책을 고수하면서 한국인의 독립운동을 막고자 노력한 인물이었다는 점도 고려해야 할 것이다. 따라서 그 역시 안중근의 의거를 지지하지는 않지만, 빌렘 신부와 마찬가지로 사제로서의 역할에 충실하고자 했던 인물로 이해된다.
네 번째는 한국 천주교의 토착화와 관련된 문제이다. 한국 천주교의 토착화가 안중근에게서 시작되었다고 본 것이다. 그러나 토착화란 한국에 천주교가 수용된 이래 끊임없이 시도된 일이었다. 안중근이 외세의 침략에 대해서 천주교 신자로서 관심을 갖기를 촉구한 것은 그러한 전통을 따른 것이었을 따름이다. 그리고 그를 토착화를 통한 민족화에만 관심을 가진 인물로 파악할 것이 아니라 천주교의 세계화에 보다 깊은 관심을 가진 인물로서 올바르게 이해해야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recently many articles about Ahn, Joong-geun deal with the correlation between him and the Roman Catholic Church. This seems to be desirable in the point that such works would be necessary to properly understand his independence movement because he was a Roman Catholic. But it is true that there are a variety of problems in historical materials and a viewpoint when the correlation between him and the Roman Catholic Church is examined.
Firstly, regarding his theory of Cheonmyeong, it would be an effective measure to emphasize the theory of Cheonmyeong as a means to understand his independence movement, however, it would be needless to make a broad interpretation of Cheonmyeong. In fact, Cheonmyeong did not concretely mean independence movement or its contents for him because he used this word in a sense that a man should live benevolently based on his good nature and should not commit a crime.
Secondly, regarding father Wilhelm's recognition of Ahn, Joong-geun's worthy undertaking, they say that he didn't accept his undertaking affirmatively according to the principle of the separation of church and state, however, he changed his mind later. But it is different from the truth because, for father Wilhelm, to understand the motive of Ahn, Joong-geun's behavior is one thing and to support his worthy undertaking is another.
Thirdly, regarding father Demange's supporting Ahn, Joong-geun's worthy undertaking, they say that a group including father Demange actively protected his undertaking. But it seems difficult to connect the author of an anonymous book "Modern history" directly with father Demange. And it should be considered that he stuck to the principle of the separation of church and state with bishop Mutel and tried to stop Korean independence movement. Therefore it seems that he did not support Ahn, Joong-geun's worthy undertaking and tried to focus on his role as a priest like father Wilhelm.
Fourthly, regarding the naturalization of the Roman Catholic Church in Korea, they say that its naturalization resulted from Ahn, Joong-geun. But its naturalization was continuously tried since the acceptance of the Roman Catholic Church by Korea, and Ahn, Joong-geun's urging the people to pay attention to external invasion as a Roman Catholic was to follow such tradition. It is needed to rightly understand Ahn, Joong-geun, not a person who took an interest in the nationalism of the Roman Catholic Church through its naturalization of, but a person who took an interested in its globalization.
