‘좋은 친구와 사귐이 범행의 전부다’라는 번역문에 대한 비판과 깔야나밋따따(kalyāṇamittatā)의의미에 대한 연구 = A Study on the Concept of Kalyāṇamittatā

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘훌륭한 친구와 사귐이 청정한 삶의 전부’라는 번역문이 있다. 원문의 출처가 󰡔상윳따니까야󰡕인 이 번역은 ‘좋은 친구가 수행의 전부다’라고 활용되기도 한다. 그러나 이 말은 부처님의 가르침이 아니다. 왜냐하면 청정한 삶이 남에게 달려 있을 리가 없고, 수행은 홀로 외딴곳에서 하라고 하셨기 때문이다. 이 오해는 ‘훌륭한 친구와 사귐’ 또는 ‘좋은 친구’라고 번역된 깔야나밋따따(kalyāṇamittatā)가 지닌 정확한 의미를 파악하지 못한 데서 연유한다.
본연구는 니까야와 아비담마에 설명된 깔야나밋따따의 의미를 찾는다. 그것은 ‘훌륭한 사람으로서의 좋은 덕목을 갖춤’ 내지 ‘훌륭한 사람 됨됨이’라는 의미를 지니고 있으며, 여기서 좋은 덕목이란 믿음이 있고, 윤리적이고, 많이 배우고, 관용이 있고, 지혜로움을 말한다. 이 개념은 본격적 수행의 조건으로서 중요한 의의가 있다. 하지만 5부 니까야에 걸쳐서 두루 광범위하게 설해졌음에도 이것은 근현대 불교에선 많이 알려지지 않은 개념이다. 본연구는 니까야의 용례를 함께 파악하면서 이 개념이 지닌 중요한 의의를 분석한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There is a translation from Pāli language, which says “Good friends, companions, and associates are the whole of the spiritual life.” This is a Teaching by Buddha which is originally stated in Saṁyuttanikāya. It often refers to Buddhists as “Good friends are the whole of the fulfillment”. However, it does not convey the accurate meaning of what Buddha meant, because Buddhist fulfillment is definitely a personal matter so Buddha let his disciples stay at secluded places for self-training. This improper translation might be caused by the lack of understanding about the word ‘kalyāṇamittatā’ in Pāli original Canon, which is literally translated as ‘good friendship’.
This study searches for its originally intended meaning of the word in early Pāli Texts, and finds that it actually represents not just ‘good friendship’ but ‘the virtuousness’ that is to say, the cultivation of desirable virtues for being a sublime personage. Those virtues include faith, morality, learning, tolerance and wisdom. The concept of ‘kalyāṇamittatā’ is as important as the basis of the full scale practice for the Buddhist attainment, but its importance has been lost in modern Buddhism. This study analyses the usages of this word in Pāli Nikāyas and tries to reveal the importance of its concept, and corrects the current translation.
