We had been made reconstruction of 21 cases of microtia autogenous cartilage at the Department of Plastic surgery in Yonsei University Hospital in Seoul,Korea for 10 years from January,1966 to December, 1975. However, follow up study was possible only 12 cases among 21 and we had analyzed these patient sex ratio, site, growth of the reconstructed ear, blurring of the contour, shrinkage of the framework, complication of the donor site, and patient contentment. The results are as followings:
1)The mele patients were 13 cases, female were 8 cases and the sex ratio was 1.6:1.
2)The site the microtia showed to bilatelity and the involvement of Rt.side were predominant.(71.4%).
3)In the growth of the reconstructed ear,4 patients(33.3%) answered that the size of the reconsructed ear was similar to that of normal and 8 patients(66.6%) complained of smaller size than normal.
4)All patient complained of some degree of the blurring of the contour.
5)There was no shrinkage of the framework.
6)Only one patient showed hypertrophic scar in the donor site and there was no other complication.
7)About the patient's contentment of their reconsructed ear, we divided the response into 4 categories from excellent, good, fair, and to poor.Six patient answered good and 5 patients answered fair and only one answered poor.
So we have conclusion that the size of the reconsructed ear should be made somewhat larger than the normal and to diminish the degree of the contour blurring, an exaggerated helical rim should be fabricated. Further more we have experienced that making a satisfactory reconsructed ear in the microtia needed surgeon's artistic tallent and sufficient practice as well as the principle and the bases of the Plastic Surgery.
