The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cooking activities on young children's mathematical problem solving abilities and attitudes toward mathematics.
The goals of this study were to first determine if cooking is beneficial to mathematical problem solving abilities.
The second goal was to determine whether or not cooking is beneficial in improving performance in attitudes toward mathematics.
This randomized, single blinded study was conducted twice a week for 4 weeks with a total of 28 students (4 to 5 years old). The participants were divided into 2 groups. 14 students in the experimental group and 14 students in the control group. The setting was the G-kindergarten and K-kindergarten in Chung Buk, South Korea. The experimental group was defined as students who took cooking classes as elective courses in school, and the control group was defined as students who took additional math classes during elective course. During the pre testing period, I concluded that there was no significant difference in knowledge of basic math between the experimental group and the control group. As a result, I concluded that both groups were at the same skill level.
The test was given to the children twice per week for 30 minutes and a total of 8 tests were performed during the 4 weeks of the experiment.
To analyze the experiment, the score of the test for problem solving and behavior toward basic math was evaluated. All tools that were used for evaluating the experiment were the same for the pre test and the post tests. The data from the experiment was processed by the SPSS program.
The following were the main outcomes of the study
1. The experimental group achieved higher scores in the problem solving abilities than the control group.
2. The experimental group achieved higher scores in developing patience for attitudes toward mathematics than the control group.
In conclusion,
1. Incorporating cooking activities into problem solving abilities was highly affective, especially categorizing ability in math.
2. Incorporating cooking activities into attitudes toward mathematics was affective, notably, improving patience for attitudes toward mathematics.
Based on this experiment, I could suggest directions for future research.
The first, since the school offers very limited resources to the kindergarteners such as lack of space and not enough utilities designed for the young aged children, it is crucial to develop a program that is suitable for the current school system. In addition, it is critical to have on going cooking programs for the children to optimize the benefit.
Secondly, the active involvements of teachers and the parents will lead to creating better interest for the children. Better participation by the school is needed and the broadened programs will have larger scales of students who can participate in the study.
Also, developing more sophisticated tests is needed to measure the accuracy of the experiments.
