This essay entitled "Household Religion" explores the last remaining practices of the Sijun religion of Gyeongju, Korea. For many years, society has paid homage to the home-bound deity Sijun, which led to the creation and praise of various other gods like Sungju(成主)Jowang(竈王), and Samsin(産神).
The word Sijun derives from the Gyeongbuk dialect for the word Sejon, meaning Buddha. The definitive reason for probing into such a seemingly derelict area of folk religious studies is that of all other folk religions, the Sijun religion has benefited from the greatest transmission and is rich in both context and meaning. According to the results of a study conducted on the Gyeongju area, empirical evidence firmly supports the fact that the transmission of household religions persists and that their practice remains alive and well. However, these studies conducted did not account for the practice of the Sijun religion and particularly neglected the overwhelming influence of Sijun religion in the Gyeongju region. Moreover the study of the Sijun religion of Gyeongju serves as a main source for understanding many of the culture aspects of folk religious practice.
The following will spell out the premises of the Sijun religion. Referred to as the Sijun Danji, the Shinli or ancestral rite of Buddha consists of grain placed in a jar, sealed with Korean paper and duly placed on the shelf of the main room in the home. Every teb years the head of the family offers simple sacrificial offerings, while the religious head bucheonim adeptly provides the ceremonial bestowing with his elaborate knowledge of the Sijun Danji arrangements. These practices reflect the social influences that the transmission of Sijun religion has played on tradition.,
After Korea adopted Buddhist practices from abroad, strong relations between the Buddhism and traditional folk religions formed. One form of religions practice that formed was that of the household religions kajung shinang, which became centralized in the Gyeongju area. It is thus through the Sijun religion that the Shilla Dynasty's Buddhist past in Korea can be analyzed.
