The purpose of this study is to define the Korean adjectival verb, categorize its type and explicate the grammatical and semantics characteristics.
This thesis is divided up into five chapter. The chapter 1 is an introduction to this study, summarizes the antecedent study and make a statement of the object of our study.
In chapter 2, the concept of adjectival is defined and its characteristics in semantics, morphology, and syntax are described. It is defined that the adjective verb has, semantically stative, conjugate for both verb and adjective and is modified by degree adverb. In addition to that, the criteria to verify the adjectival verb is established by whether or not to be possible to answer against how question. For the morphological criteria, it is defined by whether or not to be possible to conjugate the both '-는다', '-는' and '-다', '-ㄴ' or '-었다', '-ㄴ'. For the syntactic criteria, it is delineated by whether or not to be modified by degree adverb. Then the adjectival verb is divided to three stative - continuous stative, variable stative, scene stative, which is transferred to verb. The acquisition of stative lead to have adjectival with the conjugation and modification of adverb. The verified adjectival verb is classified into sensitive intransitive verb, emotion intransitive verb, relative comparison verb, object creation intransitive verb, object property intransitive verb, object reach intransitive verb, echoic verb and imitative verb.
The chapter 3 is described for the grammatical characteristic of adjectival verb. In the morphological characteristics, the criteria of a part of speech related to adjectival verb is presented. In the word formation, it is described that [adjectival] as lexical feature exerts an influence on semantic analysis for breaking against right-hand rule on derivation and compounding that adjectival verb participate in. In the syntactic characteristics, adjectival verb have the unified characteristic with the adjective in composing the aspect. And we discuss that adjectival verb is ergative predicate, and describe its argument structure and selectional restriction to the subject. It is also described, based on the statistical dealing with, that the coordinate conjunction has high possibility to co-occur with adjective.
The chapter 4 is described for the semantic characteristic of adjectival verb. In this chapter, it is, in the aspectual meaning, delineated that the adjectival verb transfers into state from the change of state. It is also delineated that the word of paradigmatic semantic relation with adjective verb has closer relationship with adjective than verb through the synonym and the antonym. In addition to that, the criteria to deal with a word of many meanings, poly-word of speech and homonym is specified through the multiple meaning relationship.
In chapter 5, the summary of this report is described and the remaining issues are explicated.
The study of adjective verb is meaningful that the go-and-come phenomenon between categories is drawn into the linguistics issue and the adjectival verb, which has considered as exception, is defined as lexical category with its characteristics. The list of adjectival verb and characteristics of individual word might be referred to basic data such as dictionary, machine translation and WordNet etc.
