Fabrication and Characteristics of Co-Pt Nano-Sized Dot Arrays

Co-Pt alloy lms fabricated by DC magnetron sputtering exhibited high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a high coercivity of up to 2690 Oe. The Co-Pt nano-sized dot arrays were patterned by using electron beam lithography and ion beam etching processes. The patterning sizes of the dot arrays were 50 nm, 100 nm, 200 nm and 400 nm. The magnetic properties of these arrays were examined by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), a torque magnetometer and a magnetic force microscope (MFM). The dot arrays with diameters of 100 nm and 200 nm showed a single domain structure with perpendicular anisotropy. The direction of the magnetization was the in-plane direction and a multi-domain structure appeared when the dot size was >200 nm.
