물질, 물질성 담론과 문학 작품 읽기

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 물질에 대한 근대적 관념, 즉 물질을 정신의 외부에 존재하는 사물로 보거나 사물을 정신의 연장으로 보는 관념을 뛰어넘어 물질은 물질성의 형태로 이미 우리의 의식과 담론의 내적 구성요소로 작용하고 있음을 주장한다. 물질과 의식은 기존의 이분법으로 구분될 수 있는 단일한 개념이 아니다. 따라서 본 연구는 환원할 수 없는 실재인 물질을 전유하는 근대의 사유를 비판하고, 물질과 정신, 육체와 마음, 물질과 사유를 통합적으로 사고하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 그리하여 본 연구에서는 물질과 의식, 몸과 마음의 다양한 통합, 혹은 그 뒤섞임의 양상을 이론적으로, 그리고 문학작품을 통해 검토하였다.
마음과 몸, 정신과 물질의 분리는 사유 자체를 위태롭게 한다. 그 분리는 우리의 삶과 우리의 신체, 우리의 언어를 몇 개의 세계들로 분할하는 결과를 낳는다. 물질, 그리고 물질로 구성된 우리의 육체, 그리고 물질과 동일시되는 자연, ‘자연’이나 ‘동물성’의 이름으로 종종 포괄되는 ‘여성’과 ‘유색인’, ‘원주민,’ ‘괴물’, 그리고 유령들, 차이들, 환영들, 시뮬라크르들, 이 모든 것들은 앞으로도 영원히 살아남을 ‘순수한 진리’를 위해 억압된다. 하지만 주체에 의해 구성된 물질성의 범주는 그 자체로 부동의 상태가 아니며, 그 자체로 하나의 단일한 장소에 머물지 않는다. 그것은 인간의 정체성과 인간 역사의 닫혀진 본질을 위협하고, 열어젖힌다. 결국 이 시대의 윤리는 이성을 초과하는 물질성과의 관계 맺음과 소통 위에서 새롭게 세워질 수 있는 것이다. 그런 점에서 본 연구는 근대적 사유의 주변 혹은 심연 속으로 밀려난 다양한 차이적이고 유령적인 물질적 실체를 통해 근대를 본격적으로 반성하려는 시도이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is to criticize the modern concept of material, which has been regarded either as a thing outside the psyche or as an extension of mind. In contrast, we argue that our consciousness and discourse is multiply constructed through the dynamic working of materiality. Materiality and consciousness is so complicatedly intertwined that cannot be divided easily into two categories. Thus we pursued two aims: first, to criticize the modern thought that appropriates the irreducible material, and second, to rethink psyche/corporeality, mind/body, and consciousness/material dichotomy as incorporated reality. To do this we referred several theorists and analyzed various literary texts.
The traditional separation between consciousness and material ascribes differences to discrimination. This detachment results in the oppression and exclusion of the other, which has been thought to have material traits and to be inferior. Among these others are nature, body, women, people of color, native people, monsters, phantasms, and simulacra. They have been appropriated and subjected to the politics of identity which is based on the logic of sameness. Materiality, however, is not the stable and constant condition of being, but involves in the flexible and multilayered network of becoming which cannot be captured by binary oppositions. As a result, the new ethics will be established where the limits of traditional idealism are overcome by the philosophy of materiality, which restores differences and otherness from the margins of mental consciousness.
