This study analyzed the grotesque tendencies in Kurt Jooss's "The Green Table" andPina Bausch's "Café Müller", representative works of German expressionist dance, through Mikhail Bakhtin's carnival theory. The core of the study is to demonstrate that the grotesque expressiveness in theseworks is a powerful artistic means that reflects the inner world and social reality ofhumans. To analyze the two works, this study systematically approached them by usingpolarity, comedy, femininity, and festivity - the core concepts of Mikhail Bakhtin'sCarnival theory - as the main framework for analysis. The study applied Janet AdsheadLansdale's first-stage dance analysis method. Specifically, the movement was analyzedby considering all the components and basic techniques of each work, and through thismultifaceted approach, it played a key role in revealing the in-depth meaning ofgrotesque expression. As a result of the analysis, the distorted movement in Kurt Jooss's "The GreenTable" bears similarity to the "polarity" of death revealed in Mikhail Bakhtin's Carnivaltheory. This polarized movement represents a new beginning and a transcendentexpression of life seeking its source. The exaggerated gestures are interpreted as agrotesque "comedy" - a form of democratic resistance that represents the voices of thesocially underprivileged of the time. The "femininity" in the work contained the symbolicmeaning of birth and life renewal from a carnivalesque perspective through the femalebody. Finally, in terms of "festivity", the study confirmed that the opposing structure ofirregularity and atonality inherent in the work's auditory elements emphasizes newcreation and transformation as a grotesque concept. In Pina Bausch's "Café Müller", "polarity" was revealed through extreme and repetitive movements. The exploration of "comedy" in the work showed itself bysatirizing Pina Bausch's past ego and exaggerating her identity. In "Femininity", theroles of dancers representing Pina Bausch's ego were examined, revealing bodies ofwomen symbolizing the revival of the inner carnival. Finally, the combination ofatonality, happening, and opera in the work allowed for the discovery of the generativepower of grotesque expressiveness through the 'festival' of carnival theory. This study revealed that through carnival theory, grotesque expressiveness leads tosocial and historical human considerations, ultimately converging on inner positivity.Particularly, it was concluded that the grotesque expressiveness in the works of KurtJooss and Pina Bausch contains an undefeated hope. Through this analysis, the studyaims to emphasize a new perspective on the inner world of expressionist contemporarydance and present possibilities for original choreography and artistic exploration.
