Internationalization is a vital part of university development and essential for building a world-class university. The internationalization of National University of Singapore and Peking University has progressed significantly during the last two decades, yielding impressive outcomes. The main purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the differences and similarities of the internationalization strategies of the National University of Singapore and Peking University, as well as to draw implications for China’s first-class universities. This study also attempted to provide concrete and feasible implications for the development of internationalization strategies of Korean universities and other Asian universities.
There were three topics in this study. Firstly, what are the internationalization strategies of NUS and PKU respectively? Secondly, what are the similarities and differences of the internationalization strategies of the two universities? Thirdly, what implications can provide for China’s first-class universities?
The study was mainly conducted via literature review, and it establishes a comparative analysis framework based on the results of Knight and de Wit's research on university internationalization strategies. This study first made a specific analysis of the internationalization strategies of NUS and PKU from two perspectives of organizational strategy and program strategy and then compared the internationalization strategies of the two universities.
The results of the analysis are as below. First of all, the two universities' internationalization strategy are pretty similar. They have formulated particular internationalization strategies, established specific international affairs offices, supplied various services, and attached importance to recruiting foreign talents. Moreover, they all offer a diverse range of international programs to students and teachers, place a premium on English instruction, and are dedicated to establishing international research networks, joining the International University Alliance, coordinating industry-university-research development, and providing social services. Second, the governance structure, the scope of functions of the Office of International Relations, the method of attracting foreign talent, the sorts of international activities, and the building of an overseas incubation platform differ between the two universities. Therefore, Chinese first-class universities should develop specific international development strategies and short-term goals, establish offices responsible for formulating and implementing internationalization strategies, and improve outstanding foreign professors' recruitment systems. They also need to actively seek in-depth cooperation with top foreign universities, provide students with a broader range of international projects, attach importance to the training of entrepreneurial talents, and actively build an overseas incubation platform.
