과학기술과 인문학을 횡단하는 과학기술학 = STS as an Interdisciplinary Study to Traverse ‘the Two Cultures’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 과학기술학이 그 탄생기인 1960년대 말부터 현재까지 어떻게 발전해왔는지 간략히 소개하고, 그것이 오늘날의 하이브리드적 세계를 보는 관점은 기존의 학문들과 무엇이 다른지 살펴보고자 한다. 과학기술학은 토마스 쿤의 영향을 받은 과학지식사회학으로부터 시작되었으나, 1980~90년대에는 실험실 민족지연구와 기술 연구로 전환하였고 행위자-연결망이론, 페미니즘이론, 포스트구조주의 등의 영향으로 점점 물질 -기호학 접근이 중요하게 떠올랐다. 2000년대 이후 이 물질-기호학 접근은 푸코의 통찰을 더욱 확대하여, 지식 실천들이 수행적이며 그들이 묘사하는 다중적 실재들을 창출하는 데 일조한다는 점에 주목하게 되었다. 이 논문은 이러한 수행성과 다중성이 존재론적 정치에 지니는 함의를 탐색하는 것으로 결론을 맺고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to introduce the brief history of STS and to examine how its perspective on the present hybrid world is different from the existing disciplines. STS started during the late 1960s and 1970s from the sociology of scientific knowledge, which was heavily influenced by the work of Thomas Kuhn. But its focus changed during the 1980s and 1990s to ethnographic studies on laboratory and technology studies. And the importance of material- semiotics emerged and increased in STS from the influences of actor-network theory, feminist theory, and post-structuralism. Since 2000s, such a material- semiotic approach, in extending the Foucaudian insight, has noted that knowledge practices are performative, helping to create the multiple realities that they describe. The paper concludes by exploring the implications of such performativity and multiplicity for ontological politics in the real world.
