This paper tries to find out the patterns of interest in Japan and the attitudes accompanying with the interest. The data are based on students' homeworks on the title of "What I want to know about Japan." The homework was given to 171 sophomore and junior students of Japanese major at Dong-A University in the spring of 1983.
Major findings of the content analysis include:
1. Four major type of interests in Japan; topic related to Korea-Japan relations, Japanese economic success, culture and their counterparts in Japan.
2. The first two topics are regarded to be determined mainly by politico-historical or politico-economical condition. Whereas, the third topic is more autonomous and the fourth is more automatic type of interest.
3. Repulsive attitude toward Japan is more dominant in the first topic, whereas, indrcement is dominant in the third and fourth topic, and the two attitudes are mixed up in the second topic.
