In the process of learning a region, the perception on the region consists of the concept of students and the experience of everyday life. In this study I attempted to construct contents of learning a region based on students perception and surveyed what middle school students perceive and how to get such perception before learning. Students do not have an opportunity to establish a clear concept on a region, and have difficulties in understanding regional scale in the curriculum, thus resulting in acquiring a common concept on a region rather than a geographical concept on a region. Students conceive a region as a dot such as spot and location rather than as an area covering a certain territory. Especially, they form an identity of a region through landmarks and regional issues. Without a clear concept on a region, they show a limitation in acquiring information on a region through travels and thematic studies. The framework for learning a region that this study proposes is to include the content reflecting the perception on the region of students based on the essential attributes of the region.
