This article documents the recent evolution controversy in Kansas. In August 1999 the Kansas Board of Education passed the new Science Education Standards that excluded some of the fundamental concepts of modern science, macro-evolution and Big Bang. This exclusion stirred up heated controversy nationwide. This article focuses on the ideological conflicts expressed in this controversy.Besides the ideological dimension of this controversy, two things are significant in the history of creation-evolution controversy in America. First, a new anti-evolution strategy emerged. The new Science Education Standards excluded evolution in the state test for Kansas highschool students. An immediate implication of this decision is that even if students do not study evolution they will not be disadvantaged in entering universities in Kansas as evolution is not included in the test. If the Standards was implemented, it would seriously weaken the evolution education in the public schools in Kansas. Second, the Intelligent Design emerged as a new force. Though the old scientific creationism initiated the Kansas controversy, the Intelligent Design quickly came in the forefront. This signified an important change in the recent history of the creation-evolution controversy and needs further study.
