국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 비벌리 나이두(Beverley Naidoo)의 단편 「총」(“The Gun”, Out of Bounds)을 중심으로 아파르트헤이트 체제 아래 흑인 남아프리카인들이 경험한 생존의 정치, 식민적 절망, 그리고 윤리적 딜레마를 고찰하는 데 있다. 소년 주인공의 시선을 통해 본 논문은 인종화된 공간, 상징적 권력, 내부 식민성을 매개로 한 아파르트헤이트 폭력이 타운십과 마포텡(Mapoteng)과 같은 주변화된 지역의 일상 속에 어떻게 내면화되어 작동하는지를 면밀히 보여준다. 특히 이 연구는 ‘총’이 단순한 물리적 무기를 넘어 합법적 폭력을 독점하고 공포를 내면화시키는 동시에, 어린 주인공에게 모순된 저항의 가능성과 윤리적 선택의 지평을 여는 상징적 장치로 기능함을 분석한다. 이를 바탕으로 나이두의 서사가 구조적 억압과 내적 분열을 증언의 형성, 도덕적 각성, 탈식민적 주체성의 출현과 어떻게 교차시키는지를 논의한다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 「총」이 흑인 아동의 목소리를 서사의 중심에 배치함으로써 폭력의 기억을 비판적 성찰과 윤리적 책임, 그리고 희망의 공간으로 전환시키는 문학적 윤리를 제시하며, 아파르트헤이트 역사를 아래로부터 재구성하고 있음을 분석한다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the politics of survival, colonial despair, and ethical dilemmas experienced by Black South Africans under apartheid, focusing on Beverley Naidoo’s short story “The Gun” in Out of Bounds. Read through the perspective of the child narrator Essie, the text is understood as mapping how apartheid violence is embedded in everyday life through racialized space, symbolic power, and internal colonialism, especially in the townships and in the marginalized area of Maboteng. This thesis analyzes how the gun functions not only as a material weapon but also as a symbolic device that monopolizes legitimate violence, internalizes fear, and at the same time opens an ambivalent horizon of resistance and ethical choice for the young protagonist. On this basis, the discussion explores how Naidoo’s narrative intertwines structural oppression and internal division with emerging forms of testimony, moral awakening, and decolonial subjectivity. Ultimately, the study argues that “The Gun” reconstructs apartheid history from below by placing a Black child’s voice at the center of the narrative and presenting a literary ethics that turns the memory of violence into a space of critical reflection, responsibility, and hope.
