The aim of this study is to explore Gadamer’s concept of tradition and J?rgen Habermas’s critical theory in order to find the normative grounding of political authority in East Asian Confucian societies. With an emphasis on the concept of tradition, Gadamer claims that one cannot escape from tradition. Gadamer also defends the force of tradition as positive in emphasizing that every aspect of human understanding is ultimately connected to tradition and determined by it. However, Habermas contends that Gadamer’s appropriation of tradition underestimates human beings’ capacity to adopt a critical attitude towards their inherited culture. In his critique of Gadamer’s appropriation of tradition, Habermas argues that human beings can overcome the dogmatic force of tradition. On Habermas’ account, it is of significant importance to use reason ? critical reflection ? to overcome such dogmatic force. The different standpoint between Gadamer and Habermas is applied through an analysis of the practice of filial piety in East Asian Confucian culture.
