A serious accident occurred due a the big earthquake in East Japan, causing serious radiation exposure from the Fukushima nuclear plant. Recently, there was an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude or higher in Gyeongju and Pohang and the necessity of assessing the soundness of nuclear power plant facilities and additional safety assurance is becoming an important technological issue. In the case of South Korea, if the nuclear power plant's degree of damage is high after the earthquake, the nuclear power plant must demonstrate that it has obtained sufficient safety after evaluating the safety of nuclear plant facilities. The current evaluation technique evaluates the structural integrity by satisfying the allowable criteria for stress based on the ASME Code. However, for stress based assessments, excessive conservatism exists and these assessments cannot account for cumulative damage effects caused by repetitive loads such as earthquakes; therefore, it can lead to an unrealistic assessment. This paper contemplates the supplement to the assessment of the finite element analysis techniques for efficient Dynamic Time History Elasto-Plastic Seismic Analysis for evaluating plastic deformation by repetitive loads such as earthquakes.
The combined model which consists of beam and solid element can derive the approximate result compared to the full solid model by taking considerations of the number of elements in the element type transition region length, thickness direction, circumferential direction, and length direction of the combined model. Thus, this paper suggests the modeling techniques recommended for the complex element models for dynamic time history elasto-plastic seismic analysis.
