Ever since the discovery of the documents in Qumran in 1947 and the publication of the Rule of Community in 1955, this community had been thought to be one exclusively of celibate men, with no women members. However, around the time of the fiftith anniversary of the discovery of Qumran, that understanding has taken a fundamental turn as result of research by scholars, especially by the central figure of scholar Eileen M. Schuller. Based on evidences within the documents and archaeological evidence, they assert that women also were actual members who were part of Qumran community. This understanding has been established more firmly since the year 2000.
The texts found in this study clearly show that women in Qumran had a social place and role -even though meager and limited compared to the influence of men- that cannot be ignored or underestimated.
Among the women in Qumran, several were called “mothers”(4Q270), “daughter of truth”(4Q502), “female elders”(4Q502), “trustworthy and knowledgeable women”(4Q271), “trustworthy women”(4Q159), etc.; It appears that they carried out within the community duties that correspond to the special positions they held. Even though it was a society dominated by men, it seems that they had their proper role and position, and thus performed political and social functions. This suggests that women were not excluded from the ‘common education’(4Q271, 4Q159, 4Q502, 1QSa i 1-5, 11). Also 4Q271 4 ii 10-12 states clearly that a woman herself could be entitled to make her own oath and vow, and that this vow could not be annulled or thwarted by men without good reason. In 4Q159 8-10 and 4Q271 3 13-15 an official inspection system to protect any defilement or depreciation of women’s virginity was introduced, and here those appointed by the community for their expertise were included also women inspectors. It seems that women, as formal members of the community, played their proper role (4Q266 8 i 6-9, 1QSa ii 4-8, 1QM Ⅶ 3-4) and they also participated in community meetings and acted as witnesses of whether or not male members practiced the Mosaic law (1QSa i 11). Moreover, in 4Q266 10 i 7-9 we could see the community’s consideration of protecting women with the texts related to the community’s financial support for those women without men who supported them.
This evidence show that, at least, Qumran community did not exclude women from the community’s government and ruling positions, but actually that they had an understanding of women in a more progressive and in a more democratic manner than the Old Testaments Mosaic law that was the central norm of Jewish society at the time.
