조종 인과론과 인과비례성에 근거한 인과적 배제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

비환원적 물리주의가 주장하는 정신인과의 상황은 조종 인과론의 핵심 개념인 조종에 관한 질문을 제기하고, 그에 대한 대답은 인과적 배제의 문제에 대한 함축을 갖는다. 이 글에서는 먼저 정신인과와 조종 그리고 조종과 인과적 배제의 문제가 어떻게 관련이 되는지 논의한다. 그리고 정신적 원인이 물리적 원인을 배제한다는 종(Zhong 2020)의 주장을 논의한다. 종은 사례를 통해 인과비례성에 적절한 방식의 조종이 어떤 것이어야 하는지 보인다. 그리고 복수실현 되는 정신적 속성에 동일한 방식의 조종을 적용하여, 정신적 원인이 물리적 원인을 배제한다고 주장한다. 하지만 종이 제시하는 조종은 정신인과와 관련된 배제의 상황을 다루는 데 적합하지 않으며, 배제에 대한 그의 주장은 과학적 실천과도 부합하지 않는다. 그렇다면 인과비례성에 대한 종의 주장이 옳다고 해도, 정신적 원인이 물리적 원인을 배제한다는 주장은 성립하지 않는다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Non-reductive physicalist mental causation raises a question how should intervention, a key concept in interventionism, be understood? Answers to this question in turn have implications for the exclusion problem. Zhong (2020) claims that intervention properly understood implies a new and better solution to the problem – that is, that mental causes exclude physical causes. Zhong’s argument assumes that the intervention appropriate for causal proportionality is applicable to causal structures in which exclusion worry arises, too. I argue that his exclusion conclusion doesn’t follow even if causal proportionality requires the sort of intervention Zhong proposes. The exclusion conclusion is not compatible with ‘wide closure’, and Zhong claims that wide closure does not hold. However, this claim is not consistent with actual scientific practices and discoveries. I suggests that proportionality is about an intralevel relation (ex. Red-perception vs. scarletperception), whereas causal exclusion is about an interlevel relation (ex. Red-perception vs. some neurophysiological state in visual cortex). Proportionality does not have the alleged implication for the exclusion problem.
