뒤르케임의 사회과학철학 = 반환원주의적 통섭의 가능성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지난 10여 년간 통섭(Consilience)을 둘러싼 국내 학계의 논쟁은 학문의 최신유행을 쫓는 지적 관행을 넘어 오늘날 한국사회가 당면한 학문의 위기 상황에 대한 반성과 극복의 노력을 담고 있는 것으로 평가된다. 그러나 이제까지의 논의는 자연과학과 인문과학의 분화 이전의 상황에 대한 비판적 성찰 없이 진행된다는 점에서 한계를 갖는다. 이 글은 사회학의 창시자로 19세기 말 통합학문을 지향했던 뒤르케임의 사회과학철학을 현재 학문 통합의 방향 하에서 재조명해 보고자 한다. 비판적 실재론의 지원 속에서 더욱 명료해진 뒤르케임의 사회학적 자연주의 - 반환원주의적 층화 이론과 관계적 사회실재론 - 는 과잉자연주의적 환원주의와 인문학 내의 반자연주의적 해석학의 한계를 넘어 자연과학, 사회과학, 인문학의 분할을 새롭게 재통합하는 ‘오래된 미래’로서 반환원주의적 통섭의 가능성을 제공한다. 결국 오늘날 국내 학계에 커다란 반향을 일으킨 Consilience 논쟁은 과학 활동의 특성에 일관되게 부합하는 뒤르케임의 사회과학철학의 귀환을 요청하고 있는 생산적인 담론의 공간이라 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For the last decade, the Korean academia’s arguments over “Consilience”, the unity of knowledge, has gone beyond the pure intellectual practice pursuing the latest academic trend which is considered as self reflective and attempts to resolve the current crisis that the field of studies in Korean society faces. However, the discussions so far have proceeded without critical reflection regarding the former situational context in which natural science and human science had its division. This paper will shed new light on the philosophy of social science of Durkheim, who, as the founder of sociology, pursued interdisciplinary studies at the end of 19th century that aligned with the current direction of unity of Knowledge. Supported by the critical realism, being clearer than ever, the sociological naturalism -the anti-reductionist stratification theory and relational social realism - by Durkheim presents the potentiality of anti-reductionist consilience as the “old future” reuniting the division of natural science, social science and human science beyond the limits of hyper naturalistic reductionism and antinaturalism within humanities. Ultimately, the arguments over consilience creating a huge sensation in current Korean academia can serve as a venue for productive discussions calling for the return of Durkheim’s philosophy of social science in order to consistently meet the characteristics of scientific activities.
