This study is to bring into view the characteristic of context in everyday problem solving. There is unanimous agreement on the centrality of context for understanding practical problem solving. Most of the early developmental work on everyday problem solving has been carried out under the assumption that individuals` chosen strategies in problem solving are rational in which they show a linear process from problem recognition to solution. On the other hand, the close examination on problem solving in real life shows a recursive operation in which the stages of problem recognition, analysis, and solution are not proceeded linearly. Once actors take deliberation on solving problems, the deliberation tends to be hidden and interwoven in the context. This study demonstrates how situational properties in everyday problem solving could be seen in a few settings. This study, with the findings, discusses implications on the perspective on school learning in which tends to be treated as separated from context.
