Delayed residential independence among young adults has emerged as an important social issue shaped not only by individual economic circumstances but also by family resources and housing market conditions. Using data from the 2022 Seoul Youth Panel Survey, this study examines parent-dependent young adults (commonly referred to as “kangaroo youth” in Korea), defined as young adults who remain economically and/or residentially dependent on their parents. Logistic regression models are employed to identify the factors associated with parental dependence and to examine whether these factors differ across subtypes defined by residential and economic dependence. The results show that higher individual income and full-time employment are associated with a greater likelihood of residential independence, whereas higher household income, higher parental educational attainment, and living in an apartment are associated with a greater likelihood of co-residing with parents. Furthermore, the factors associated with parental dependence differ substantially across subtypes, suggesting that residential and economic dependence may arise through different mechanisms. These findings indicate that parental dependence among young adults cannot be explained solely by their individual economic circumstances but should be understood in relation to family resources and housing market conditions. The study therefore highlights the need for policy interventions tailored to different forms of parental dependence, including expanded youth housing provision and financial support for rental deposits.
